Created by State Decree No. 43,903/2012,Fundo Verde de Desenvolvimento e Energia para a Cidade Universitária (Green Fund for the Development and Energy for the Cidade Universitária Campus) of Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro receives funds from the exemption to the ICMS tax, which is collected by the state government of Rio de Janeiro, on the electricity bill of the Cidade Universitária campus da Cidade Universitária – UFRJ. Essa receita é revertida para projetos de melhoria da mobilidade e uso de energia – eficientização e geração a partir de fontes alternativas.

These projects are managed by the Fundo Verde projects department and by the UFRJ Support Foundation – COPPETEC, with support from various sectors of the university with a view to their implementation. All expenditures are subject to approval by a board consisting of representatives from the public and private sectors, from the university, and of professionals with expertise in the areas in which Fundo Verde operates.

Fundo Verde – UFRJ has already funded more than 80 scholarships (técnicos administrativos, professores, estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação), em diversos projetos, principalmente na área de energia e mobilidade.  Por meio das bolsas, o Fundo engloba o conceito social da sustentabilidade nas suas ações, promovendo o treinamento e estímulo à pesquisa para servidores e capacitando os alunos ao pensamento sustentável e eficiente para quando forem ao mercado de trabalho.
